I've been getting this damn annoying little message/prog/whatever the fuck this is every 10 minutes for the past day. Is this a virus, if so how fucked am I, and how do i get rid of it.

System: Athlon Xp 2400+
using Cable internet via cox cable
OS: win2k downloaded all the updates this morning off the microsoft site.

As the alertbox is called project1 its probably some lameass friend who has learned some VB and has now installed his "trojan" on your computer. Hurt him.

Firstly, have you got a firewall? If not, get one, as a cable modem is a prime target for hackers and DoS attacks.
To get rid of the problem, I'd use a virus-scanner (AVG is free, IIRC), and run Ad-Aware just to make sure. Failing that, check your startup programs and make sure that nothing malicious is running.

I got this too sometime last night/this afternoon. It is tied into a sysu.exe, google that (if you can), there are a few message board results about it. I followed what they said, but it didn't get rid of it completely. Now my internet connection is half fucked, the problem seems to be DNS/hosts related. And of course right now I can't get to google to look stuff up about it. And, if you haven't rebooted yet, don't. It disables your desktop, forcing you to pull up task manager to launch programs. If this happens, you can end the instance of explorer.exe running and start a new one, that should give your desktop/taskbar back. Hopefully some figures out how to undo this soon.

I should probably be doing something more important than this.
